Background of the Study
Needlestick injuries are a major occupational hazard for healthcare workers, particularly nurses, who are frequently exposed to sharps while providing patient care (Okoro & Abdulrahman, 2023). Such injuries pose significant risks for transmitting bloodborne diseases, including HIV, hepatitis B, and hepatitis C, thus impacting both the health of healthcare workers and patient safety (Muhammad & Nuhu, 2024). At the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Jalingo, nurses regularly deal with needles and other sharps during patient care, making them vulnerable to needlestick injuries.
Despite the known risks, research into the specific patterns, causes, and preventive measures for needlestick injuries among nurses in Nigeria is limited (Ahmed & Danladi, 2023). Effective safety protocols, such as proper handling of needles, needle disposal systems, and the use of protective equipment, are critical to reducing the incidence of these injuries. This study will investigate the extent of nurses' exposure to needlestick injuries at FMC Jalingo and evaluate the impact of these injuries on their safety practices.
Statement of the Problem
Nurses at FMC Jalingo are exposed to needlestick injuries as part of their daily duties, which places them at risk of contracting serious infections (Zubairu & Shehu, 2023). While safety protocols exist, the effectiveness of these measures in preventing injuries and mitigating their impact on safety practices remains unclear. The lack of comprehensive data on needlestick injuries at FMC Jalingo has hindered the development of targeted interventions to reduce these incidents and improve nurse safety.
This study seeks to investigate the frequency of needlestick injuries among nurses at FMC Jalingo, the associated safety practices, and the impact of these injuries on the nurses' health and care practices.
Objectives of the Study
1. To investigate the frequency of needlestick injuries among nurses at FMC Jalingo.
2. To evaluate the impact of needlestick injuries on safety practices among nurses at FMC Jalingo.
3. To recommend strategies for reducing the incidence of needlestick injuries and improving safety practices at FMC Jalingo.
Research Questions
1. How often do nurses at FMC Jalingo experience needlestick injuries?
2. What impact do needlestick injuries have on safety practices among nurses at FMC Jalingo?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce the incidence of needlestick injuries and improve safety practices at FMC Jalingo?
Research Hypotheses
1. The frequency of needlestick injuries among nurses at FMC Jalingo is high, with significant impact on safety practices.
2. Nurses who experience needlestick injuries are more likely to engage in unsafe practices due to fear or lack of knowledge on prevention.
3. Effective safety protocols, such as needle disposal and protective measures, significantly reduce the incidence of needlestick injuries among nurses.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nurses at FMC Jalingo and their experiences with needlestick injuries. Limitations may include self-reported data on injuries, which may be biased or incomplete. The study will not cover other healthcare workers or facilities outside FMC Jalingo.
